NLADA and the Mississippi Office of the State Public Defender bring you the 2026 Appellate Defender Training in Jackson, MS.
Join us for a comprehensive, hands-on training designed for appellate public defenders and advocates. This program guides participants through the full spectrum of appellate practice—from developing a clear theory of the case and crafting compelling themes, to mastering storytelling, brief writing, editing, and oral advocacy.
Participants will benefit from a mix of lectures, interactive small-group workshops, and panels featuring appellate judges and individuals with lived experience, gaining insights into what works in court and how to build trust with clients. Special sessions focus on public speaking, collaborative case strategy, and strategies to identify and address racial bias in appellate advocacy. By the end of the program, participants will have practical skills and tools to produce persuasive briefs, present effective oral arguments, and ensure client-centered, equitable advocacy in every case.
Thank you to Mississippi College for providing our training space!
