How Federal Funding Cuts Impact State and Local Budgets
Thursday, July 31st, 2025 @ 4PM EST/3PM CST/2PM MST/1PM PST
As Congress considers the Trump Administration’s proposals to make deep cuts to – and in some cases eliminate – funding for a wide range of federal programs, many are asking how these massive disinvestments of federal resources would impact state and local governments’ budgets. Presented in conjunction with NLADA’s JustFundIt campaign, this web event will provide an overview of the federal revenue that states and local government traditionally receive; how state and local government might fill gaps left by reduced federal resources; and perspectives from public defender and civil legal aid providers who rely on state and local funding to support services for people with low incomes. The discussion will provide concrete examples of the potential domino effect that defunding federal programs will have on state and local budgets, and in turn on local communities around the country.
