Join Us for the Next ACCD Training in Chicago, IL on April 9-10, 2026!

NLADA and the Cook County Public Defenders will co-host the Spring 2026 American Council of Chief Defenders (ACCD)

Chicago’s historic abolition of cash bail and the launch of two groundbreaking community-rooted defense centers have reshaped what justice can look like when it is built with and for the people. This national gathering invites Chief Public Defenders to witness an innovative model in action, engage directly with community partners, and experience approaches that strengthen both advocacy and belonging. Chiefs will leave with renewed vision, actionable strategies, and a deeper network committed to transforming public defense into an engine of community power.

In a time of shifting political landscapes and increasing challenges to the rights of the accused, ACCD offers an essential space for Chief Public Defenders from across the country to recharge, reconnect, and reimagine the future of public defense. This two-day immersive gathering is designed for thought leaders and community-driven advocates who are shaping the future of criminal defense. It is a sanctuary for provocative discussion, a hub for strategic action, and a platform for renewed inspiration. Here, we will revisit the fundamental principles that ground our work—the Sixth Amendment, client-centered representation, and our resolute commitment to justice, unshackled and unfettered justice. Agenda coming soon!

This convening is only open to Chief Public Defenders and Deputy Chiefs.
